Sumdog is an online learning tool that you can use to learn math, reading and writing. While most of the games are free, some require a $6 a month fee to play. Practicing your skills on reading and writing require you to have a subscription. Sumdog allows you to learn things in a fun way. The games are made for both boys and girls. Some game themes are sports, dress up, animals and pretend, like being a chef.
In Sumdog you can play against the computer, your friends or the world. It can be hard, however, to get into the same game as your friends if they are not in your school. You can also search for people you know by friending them. You get to customize an avatar by changing your clothes or face but you need to get coins in order to customize your clothing and accessories. You get coins from playing games. You can win about 20 coins per game. Prices for the clothes and accessories are about 200 for some of the cheaper things but the more expensive ones, like a helmet, cost 5000 coins. It can take some time to earn enough to buy cool things.
As you play, you test other skills other than just addition and subtraction. It can be boring in the beginning because it might test skills that you have already learned, but because you are playing against either the computer or others it can move very fast.
Overall, Sumdog is fun but it is very tedious to earn coins because while the pace is fast, it is the same things over and over again. The game reinforces the things that you have already learned because you have to think fast. I would suggest that if you need to learn math, reading or writing, that you use Kahn Academy because there are more things to do, like making your own programs, playing other people’s programs and you earn rewards (energy points) quicker, which you can use to get different avatars.
